Student Stories – Sellersburg

Martha Mancheno Cabezas

"I always dreamed of getting a quality college education but I couldn’t commit to school as I am a working mother of three. When I came to Ivy Tech, I discovered a team of people, office staff, teachers, and advisors who were dedicated to helping me succeed. I did struggle a few times, but taking one class at the time, I am finally reaching my goal. I proudly graduated December 2018 with a GPA of 4.0. I couldn’t have done it without my Ivy Tech family!"

"For me, Ivy Tech brings more to my future than a certificate or degree. The college is dedicated to student success and, offers a multitude of ways to develop skills and greater growth. I’ve participated in the Workforce Excellence Program, Pathfinders Mentoring Program, Student Leadership Academy, as well as starting the International Student Organization. All of which enriches my experience and makes me a better job candidate. The connections I’ve made with students and faculty from the Sellersburg campus and others will strengthen my future."

"Ivy Tech has helped me start my journey in my life. After graduating high school, it took me a couple years to continue my education. I was nervous at first but Ivy Tech provided the support that I needed to succeed. I was even selected to go to a NASA facility through a community college program — I would never have had that opportunity if I wasn’t an Ivy Tech student! I cannot thank Ivy Tech enough for all of the help and encouragement that staff and faculty provide, as well as all the leadership and growth opportunities the school makes available."

"For many years, opioids were my life and struggle. Following my new found recovery on March 10, 2015, I saw loved ones lose their battle and lives to overdosing. I also saw the lack of resources for substance abuse prevention, treatment, and recovery resources in the Southern Indiana area. That’s what inspired me to enroll in the Human Services program at Ivy Tech. The support, and encouragement from the faculty and staff has been incredible, even President Sue Ellspermann has helped me to path my dreams into reality. Today, I’ve become an effective leader through the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, I’m getting my degree, and I have clear plan for the future. Most importantly, I WILL make a difference."
