Student Stories – South Bend/Elkhart

Danielle Johnson

"After two disappointing university experiences, I had to try something different. I was strained by the student loans from my previous college attempts, and I needed to stay close to my family. I chose Ivy Tech South Bend for it’s Dental Hygienist program, location, and affordability. With the support of my fiancée, a Chancellor’s scholarship, and my Ivy Tech adviser, Darin Doverspike, I was on my way. Everyone on campus, faculty and staff, have helped me in every way possible. I am so proud to graduate in May 2021; reaching my dream of becoming a dental hygienist, and being able to give people a happier, healthier smile."

"Being a role model for my two younger siblings, working full-time, and attending college as a first-generation DACA student has been difficult. As a DACA student, I am not eligible for government funding to support my education. Thankfully, Ivy Tech provides flexible schedules, affordable tuition, and is close to my home and work. Soon, I’ll earn my degr ee in Criminal Justice and am so grateful for the support of my family, Ivy Tech staff and faculty. To those who donated to the scholarships that helped me on the last leg of this journey, I am forever thankful."

"Ever since I graduated high school, I’ve been fascinated by firearm technology. I wanted to work in a gunsmith shop and had heard that CNC knowledge would be good for this trade. That’s when I found Ivy Tech’s Machine Tool Technology program. I took a few classes and really enjoyed how hands-on and involved the program was. The instructors are so helpful and relatable. Through Ivy Tech’s Apprentice Office, I was able to secure a 5-year apprenticeship at Bristol Tool & Die located in Bristol, IN. This apprenticeship is my next stepping stone towards becoming a licensed Journeyman through the U.S. Department of Labor."
